Formerly in the genus Vriesea, the Tillandsia espinosae is a small air plant with a 3"-4" rosette comprised of stiff, gray leaves that form in clusters and is native to Peru and Ecuador, where it grows in large colonies in native bombax trees. The inflorescence or bloom of the tillandsia espinosae is a vivid red 4" spike composed of bracts that contrast with purple flowers.

The tillandsia espinosae produces stolons which are offshoots from the main plant that grows horizontally above ground, with new shoots forming along the tip. Prefers bright, indirect light and regular fertilization. Water regularly.
