Understanding Pot Sizes

We explain the basics behind how pots are measured and sized.

Every day, we get questions about how to choose the correct pot size for a new plant. We know it can be confusing, especially for beginning plant fans. This blog and illustration were created to help answer your questions so you can pick the perfect pot to match that perfect plant.

How pots are sized

Pots and planters are measured by the opening at the top of the pot rim. The sizes range in inches from a very small, say, a 2.5" pot, all the way up to a 12" and 15" pot, large enough to plant a six-foot Fiddle Leaf Fig. What is important to keep in mind when picking your size is that your new pot should have excess room to allow the root mass to easily transfer and allow for additional soil around the root ball. Most plant gurus recommend purchasing a pot about 2" larger than the plant you are purchasing or replanting.

Pick a quality pot with drainage for a healthy plant.

We recommend purchasing pots with drainage holes manufactured in the pot and sold with a matching saucer to catch excess water. Two lines we carry that we are fans of are the Gemstone Cylinder from Momma Pots, available in a range of pastel  and jewel tone colors.

A second option we recommend is our colorful ceramic cylinders with saucers from Chive. This company creates fun pots in novel designs that will add style to your space and make your plant a star. Like the Momma Pot Gemstone Cylinder, Chive's lineup of pots is also manufactured with drainage holes and sold with matching saucers. If you purchase a plant and a pot online, we urge you to purchase a pot that is 2" larger than the plant you are purchasing. An added benefit is when you purchase both, we will plant your new plant in your pot, at no charge. Then, you can have us deliver it to your door.
